With stories, art, and science, Eigen Haard aimed to find a place on Dutch family coffee tables. The Haarlem publishers A.C. Kruseman and H.D. Tjeenk Willink launched the magazine. The first issue appeared in December 1874; the first volume is dated 1875.
Hendrik de Veer was the first editor-in-chief. H.F.R. Hubrecht focused on nature and science, J.H. Rennefeld on art. Charles Rochussen contributed illustrations from the start and later took on an editorial role.
Stories appeared alongside essays and artwork illustrations. These images made the magazine appealing to browse. Together with the texts, they show what engaged readers and how the Netherlands portrayed itself.
Libraries list the series as running from 1875 to 1941. At DBNL, volumes from 1882 and 1915 are available digitally. An original title page or issue remains the best source for checking names, dates, or contributions.
